Venus blazes at its brightest this week: what to see in the sky tonight
The evening of August 6 offers one of the more accessible skywatching windows of the month if you know where to look. Venus is sitting low in the west-southwest right after sunset — bright enough to punch through moderate light pollution and easy to find if you face west and look for the brightest point in the evening sky after dark. That brightness is not a trick of the moment. Venus reaches its greatest eastern elongation on August 15, which means it is currently as well-placed as it gets for evening viewing before it begins sinking back toward the horizon over the following two weeks.
Pre-dawn, Saturn and Mars are doing their own work in the southern and eastern sky respectively. Neither requires dark skies or specialized gear to appreciate, and both reward even a modest telescope. The next two weeks constitute a genuinely good window for Saturn in particular — the rings are tilted favorably, and a 50mm aperture begins resolving them clearly.
Below the planets, the Perseid meteor shower is building toward its August 12–13 peak. Tonight is not the peak, but the shower is already active at roughly 20–30 meteors per hour from a dark site. If you are driving somewhere rural this weekend, it is worth knowing where to look.
Tonight's Sky: The Four Things Worth Tracking
Venus — west-southwest after sunset, visible through ~9:30 PM local
Venus is the first planet most people notice in the evening sky once it emerges from conjunction. You do not need to wait until full darkness — the planet becomes visible in civil twilight roughly 30 minutes after sunset, when the sky is still blue and Venus is already bright enough to catch. Look west-southwest and about 10–15° above the horizon.
Through a small telescope at 50–100x magnification, Venus shows a distinct phase — right now a fat crescent as it moves between Earth and the sun. This is one of the more satisfying observations you can make with beginner gear because the phase is immediately obvious and shifts noticeably over days and weeks. If you have a 4-inch reflector or 80mm refractor, you have enough aperture to see the phase clearly. The practical note: Venus gets lower over the next two weeks. The window to see it comfortably above the horizon at a reasonable altitude is actually better now than it will be at greatest elongation on August 15, when it sits lower and sets right at the end of twilight. This is counterintuitive — you'd think greatest elongation means best viewing. For Venus, greatest eastern elongation means greatest angular distance from the sun, which places it lower in the sky for Northern Hemisphere observers as the ecliptic tilts south in late summer. Now is the better week.
Saturn — rises around 9–10 PM local, highest around 3 AM, southern sky
Saturn rises a few hours after sunset and transits the southern sky in the pre-dawn hours. At magnitude 0.5–0.8, it is noticeably brighter than the surrounding stars and unmistakable once you've found it. A small telescope at 50–100x magnification resolves the ring system clearly — you can see the Cassini Division, the main gap in the rings, with a 3-inch telescope under decent conditions.
No dark skies are required for Saturn. The planet is bright enough that a 50mm finder scope or even sharp naked-eye vision can pick it out from suburban areas. For astrophotography, a tracker or equatorial mount helps, but for just looking, Saturn is one of the most forgiving targets in the sky. Mars — rises around 1–2 AM, eastern sky through dawn
Mars rises in the east a few hours before sunrise and is visible through the pre-dawn hours. It has a distinct reddish cast that differentiates it from the white and blue stars around it. You will not see surface features —Syrtis Major, the polar caps — without a 6-inch or larger telescope under good seeing conditions. What you can see is the color and the brightness, both of which are changing as Earth closes the distance. Earth passes between Mars and the sun in November, and the planet will brighten significantly by then. Think of this as the start of a multi-month observing project.
Mercury — low in the east before sunrise, challenging from mid-northern latitudes
Mercury reached greatest western elongation on August 2, which means it is still reasonably placed in the eastern sky before sunrise this week. It is low — 5–10° above the horizon — and requires a clear, unobstructed eastern horizon. You need to be out about 30–45 minutes before sunrise and looking east-northeast. From a city, buildings and trees will block the view. From a hilltop or open area, it is possible to catch.
Mercury is genuinely difficult to observe for most of the year because it never gets far from the sun's glare. The current window is one of the better ones for Northern Hemisphere observers, and if you have never seen Mercury, this is the week to try. It outshines Mars right now and sits higher than Jupiter in the pre-dawn eastern sky during the first week of August.
Perseids Building Toward Peak: Not Tonight, But Worth It Now
The Perseid meteor shower peaks on the night of August 12–13, and this year the conditions are unusually good. The New Moon falls on August 11, meaning the nights around peak are essentially moonless — the darkest possible sky for this shower. The last moonless Perseid peak was 2018. This is a meaningfully rare window.
Right now, rates are running at roughly 20–30 meteors per hour from a dark site with good horizon coverage. This is not peak activity, but it is enough to be worth stepping outside. A reclining chair and 20 minutes of dark adaptation — no phone screens, which reset your night vision — makes a significant difference in what you can see. Perseids are fast meteors, burning up at about 60 kilometers per second, and the brighter ones leave persistent glowing trains that linger for a second or two after the meteor itself is gone.

If you want to photograph Perseids, a wide-angle lens at ISO 1600–3200 with a 15–30 second exposure on a tripod-mounted camera will capture trails. A star tracker allows longer exposures and more meteors per frame. The shower radiant — the point in the sky from which the Perseids appear to originate — is near the constellation Perseus, which rises in the northeast in the late evening this time of year. You do not need to look directly at Perseus; meteors can appear anywhere in the sky, and looking 30–45° away from the radiant gives you longer trails.
The Week Ahead in Skywatching
Friday and Saturday nights offer the next opportunity for Perseid hunting if tonight does not work out. Each night between now and August 12, the rate climbs by roughly 5–10 meteors per hour. The weekend nights of August 8–9 will be running at perhaps 50–60 per hour from a good dark site — a meaningful preview of peak.
Venus continues as the dominant evening object through mid-August. After August 15, it sinks lower and becomes progressively harder to catch as it heads back toward the sun. The next genuinely good evening window for Venus doesn't come until it re-emerges as a morning object in late September.
The August 12 six-planet alignment — Jupiter, Mercury, Mars, Uranus, Saturn, and Neptune in the morning sky — is real but the media framing oversells it. You cannot see all six with the naked eye. Mars and Saturn are the accessible naked-eye targets; Jupiter and Mercury are low and require clear horizons; Uranus and Neptune need optical aid. If you want to understand why the alignment is happening — it is a geometric coincidence of orbital periods, not a physically significant event — it is worth knowing where Saturn and Mars are now, so the August 12 morning has some context.
