If you're brand new and not sure if astronomy is for you: get the Seestar S30. It's $329, requires no learning curve, and produces publishable images on night one. You can sell it used for $250 if you don't stick with the hobby — that's a $79 cost to test an entire new interest.
If you've been around for a while and want maximum visual aperture: the 8-inch Dob is still the answer. Nothing beats $600 of aperture for visual deep-sky work.

The 2026 telescope market: what's changed
Three shifts reshaped the beginner telescope landscape this year.
Smart telescopes are now a third category. Five years ago, the choice was refractor vs Dobsonian vs computerized SCT. In 2026, there is a third option that did not exist in 2021: a sealed all-in-one box that does alignment, tracking, image stacking, and post-processing in a 3 kg package with no eyepiece. The ZWO Seestar S50 leads this category at $499; its smaller sibling S30 launched in August 2026 at $329.
Refractor prices have collapsed. A 60-80mm ED refractor that cost $700 in 2020 now costs $300-400. The trade-off is that dedicated refractors still require equatorial mounts and laptops or stellarmate-type controllers for imaging. For pure visual use, an 80mm ED refractor on a manual mount is now genuinely affordable — a $700 setup that simply wasn't achievable for a working astrophotographer in 2020.
Smart telescope → computerized SCT → Dobsonian is the new entry hierarchy. A beginner who is uncertain about astronomy will probably start with a smart telescope because the friction-free experience lowers the activation energy. A beginner who wants to learn the sky and look through an eyepiece starts with a Dobsonian. Any telescope sold in a department store for under $200 with "1000x magnification" claims. These are toys. They will not show you Saturn's rings, will not track, and the equatorial mount will frustrate you. We have not found a department-store telescope under $200 that meets our minimum quality bar in five years of testing.
Celestron PowerSeeker 127EQ ($220). It is the most-bought beginner telescope on Amazon and the most-returned. The optics are usable. The mount is not. Spend the extra $80 on the manual-dob alternative or save the money for a Seestar S30.
"Beginner bundles" from brands you've never heard of. Most of these are rebrands of the same SkyWatcher/Celestron/Bresser units with upcharge packaging. Stick to known brands.
