The Milky Way core is at peak — and the full Moon is trying to spoil it

Late July is when northern observers wait for all year. The galactic center — Sagittarius A*, the dense core of the Milky Way — clears the southeastern horizon around 10 PM local time and climbs to its highest near midnight. The brightest parts of the Sagittarius–Scorpius region, packed with emission nebulae, dark dust lanes, and the densest globular cluster fields in the entire celestial sphere, are at their best visibility for the next four to six weeks.

There's a problem. The full Moon was yesterday — July 29 at 14:36 UTC, the Buck Moon — and tonight, July 30, the Moon is still at roughly 99% illumination, waning gibbous by less than a day. It rises around sunset, climbs through the south all night, and sets near sunrise. Every faint target in the sky gets washed out until moonset. That doesn't make tonight a wash. It just means the targets have to be chosen for what they are, not what surrounds them.

Here's the plan.

A 99%-illuminated Moon rising at sunset is the worst-case scenario for deep-sky observers. By midnight it's high in the south, dropping the visual limiting magnitude from ~6.0 under a dark site to roughly 4.0 — a quarter of what you'd see with no Moon. Faint nebulae like the Veil, the North America, or the outer arms of the Sagittarius star clouds become effectively invisible. But bright globular clusters, brighter open clusters, and planetary nebulae don't care. They punch through.

The Moon reaches last quarter on August 6 at 02:21 UTC. After that, it rises later each night. By Friday, August 7, the Moon is a thin waning crescent rising around 2 AM local — leaving the entire evening and most of the night dark. That's the deep-sky window. It opens in eight days.

Five Targets That Beat the Moonlight

These are the targets worth your time tonight, even with the Moon washing out the sky. Magnitudes are visual; lower = brighter.

M22 is the gem. A tight, bright globular cluster that resolves into individual stars at moderate magnification even through modest scopes. It sits in Sagittarius near the lid of the "teapot," and at magnitude 5.1 it's visible to the naked eye from a dark site. Through 10x50 binoculars it shows as a fuzzy ball; through any telescope at 80x or higher, individual stars start to resolve around the edges. Tonight it's about 30° above the southern horizon at 11 PM EDT — high enough to be well-placed.

M13, the "Great Globular in Hercules," is the showpiece target of summer nights and arguably the most famous deep-sky object in the northern sky. At magnitude 5.8 it's slightly fainter than M22, but it's higher in the sky tonight (about 60° up at 11 PM) and its stars resolve cleanly through a 6-inch or larger scope. If you only have time to look at one target tonight, M13 is the right answer — and it sits almost at the zenith, as far from the Moon's glare as anything in the sky.

M11 — the Wild Duck Cluster — is a dense open cluster in Scutum that looks nothing like a globular. It's a triangular wedge of stars that resolves beautifully through binoculars or any small scope. At magnitude 6.3 it sits right at the edge of naked-eye visibility from a dark site, but it punches through moonlight cleanly. Through binoculars at 10x you'll see it as a sharp, bright knot. Through a small scope, the "wild duck" V-shape becomes obvious.

M27, the Dumbbell Nebula, is the brightest planetary nebula in the summer sky. Planetary nebulae are the expelled outer layers of dying stars, and M27's oxygen-III emissions respond well to an OIII filter — the only filter that's actually useful against moonlight. At magnitude 7.5 it needs at least a small telescope, but through a 6-inch scope at moderate magnification the dumbbell shape is unmistakable.

M5 — a globular cluster in Serpens that doesn't get the press of M13 but is actually slightly brighter and just as impressive. It's well-placed by late evening and, at magnitude 5.6, holds up cleanly against a bright Moon. A worthy fifth target if you have time after the others.

The Plan: Catching the Galactic Core This Week

Tonight's targets are bright, but the real show is the Sagittarius region — the dense nebulae and star clouds that make summer nights unforgettable. Here's how to catch them as the Moon wanes:

Tonight (Thu Jul 30): Stick to the five targets above. Skip the faint nebulae — they won't be visible.

Saturday (Aug 1): Moon rises around 9:30 PM, giving you a roughly 90-minute dark window from sunset. Use it for M8 (Lagoon Nebula), M20 (Trifid Nebula), and M16 (Eagle Nebula) — three of the summer's most-photographed emission nebulae, all within a few degrees of each other in Sagittarius. All three are bright enough (mag 6.0–6.3) to handle a low-elevation, slightly-moonlit sky.

Monday (Aug 3): Moon rises around 10:50 PM. The window from sunset to moonrise is roughly three hours of good dark sky — long enough to grab the Sagittarius star clouds with binoculars or a wide-field scope, plus NGC 7000 (North America Nebula) in Cygnus.

Wednesday (Aug 5): Moon is at last quarter phase, rising around midnight. The full evening is dark. This is when you go for the Sagittarius star clouds, the Milky Way core panorama, and any of the summer's faint nebulae. If you're imaging, this is the night to start.

Friday–Sunday (Aug 7–9): The Moon is a waning crescent rising between 2 and 4 AM. Most of the night is dark. Best wide-field astrophotography window of the month for Milky Way panoramas.

New Moon (Aug 12): Peak dark sky. But also the peak of the Perseids — don't waste the darkness on deep-sky when there's a meteor shower happening.

A Note on Planets Tonight

The Moon's not the only thing happening. Two planets are easy catches tonight:

Saturn rises around 11 PM local time in the east-southeast, in Pisces near the Circlet. It's stationary in the sky as of July 27 (just past its stationary point), so it's not moving much against the background stars — that's normal for a planet approaching opposition. Tonight's magnitude is around +0.5. By 4 AM local time, Saturn is more than 30° above the southeastern horizon. Through any telescope at 80x or higher, the rings are tilted at about 9° from our line of sight — visibly thinner than usual, a reminder that our view of the solar system is always in motion. Titan is the brightest moon and easy to spot. Saturn reaches opposition on October 4, 2026, and will be brighter in the autumn.

Venus is the easiest planet to see tonight — blazing in the western sky at magnitude -4.3, setting roughly two and a half hours after sunset. By the end of July, Venus has brightened slightly from -4.1 to -4.3 and moved from southern Leo into Virgo. Through any small telescope at 50x or higher, the gibbous phase is visible — currently about 56% lit and growing smaller in apparent size as Venus pulls toward Earth. Jupiter is in solar conjunction today (July 29) and effectively invisible. Mars is in Taurus but too close to the Sun for reliable observation and won't return to the predawn sky until later in the fall. Mercury is just appearing in the morning twilight near Pollux but is faint.
