Perseid peak tonight with a six-planet alignment before sunrise — here's your two-window night

Tonight is one of those rare nights where the sky earns a second look. The Perseid meteor shower reaches its peak — and this year's conditions are as good as they get: a New Moon on August 11 means tonight's sky is as dark as it gets, with no lunar interference washing out the fainter streaks. The expected rate at the peak is roughly 90–120 meteors per hour from a dark site, which translates to one bright Perseid every 20–30 seconds for much of the night. More on that below.

Separately, a six-planet alignment — Mercury, Jupiter, Mars, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune — becomes visible in the roughly 30–60 minutes before sunrise on August 13. All six worlds appear spread along the ecliptic, the same plane Earth's orbit occupies, creating the geometric illusion of a lineup. Only four are bright enough to see without help: Mercury, Jupiter, Mars, and Saturn. Uranus and Neptune require binoculars or a telescope.

These are two distinct observing windows, roughly 12 hours apart. Here is what to expect from each.

Tonight's Two-Window Sky

Window 1: After Dark — Perseid Peak (Best 11:30 PM – 4:00 AM Local)

The Perseid shower peaks tonight. The narrow peak window runs from the night of August 12 into the pre-dawn hours of August 13, and because the New Moon falls just 24 hours earlier, the entire peak unfolds under moonless skies. This is the darkest Perseid peak in a multi-year cycle, and the conditions rival anything the shower has produced since 2024.

From a dark site — a state park, a rural backyard, anywhere removed from city lights — the realistic Perseid rate is 60–100 meteors per hour after midnight when the radiant in Perseus is highest. From a suburban yard, expect 30–50 per hour: still one every 90 seconds on average, enough to keep a lawn chair session active. The Perseids are fast meteors — 59 kilometers per second — and they frequently produce bright fireballs with persistent trains, the kind that make you say something out loud even if you are alone.

The shower is active all night, but the best window is roughly 11:30 PM to 4:00 AM local time, when Perseus is highest in the northeast sky. No equipment needed: just dark-adjusted eyes, a clear sky, and patience. The Perseids radiate from near the Double Cluster in Perseus, but they can appear anywhere in the sky — face northeast for the highest rate, but any direction will produce visible meteors.

The Perseids come from debris shed by Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, which orbits the Sun roughly every 133 years. Each August, Earth passes through the comet's trail, and particles the size of a grain of sand hit the atmosphere at 59 km/s, burning up in the mesosphere in the brief bright streaks we call shooting stars.

The shower remains active through approximately August 22. If tonight is cloudy, any clear night in the next week still offers above-average Perseid rates, just not at peak levels.

Window 2: Pre-Dawn August 13 — Six-Planet Alignment

For the second window, set an alarm roughly 45 minutes before your local sunrise and face east. Six planets are visible along the ecliptic in the hour before dawn on August 13. This is a geometric alignment — the planets are not physically in a line, but from Earth's vantage point they appear clustered because all orbit the Sun in roughly the same plane.

This six-planet event is not uncommon — planetary alignments happen a few times per decade in some form — but the combination of a Perseid peak and a moonless sky on the same night is genuinely rare. What Else Is Still Worth Watching Tonight

Venus remains the brightest object in the western sky after sunset. It reaches its greatest eastern elongation on August 15 — meaning it is as far from the Sun as it gets in this evening apparition, and as well-placed as it gets for evening viewing before it begins sinking back toward the horizon. Look west after dark: it is hard to miss.

Saturn in a telescope is the other tonight target worth the effort. The rings are tilted about 9 degrees toward Earth as of mid-August, and a 50mm aperture begins resolving the Cassini Division, the dark gap between the inner B ring and outer A ring.
