Perseids peak under a New Moon on Aug 12-13: 6 launches and an ISS story anchor the week
The most important thing this week is that most of the news will happen overhead. Six Falcon 9 launches are on the calendar from Vandenberg and Cape Canaveral between Tuesday and Sunday, plus the H3's ninth flight from Tanegashima carrying Japan's Quasi-Zenith Satellite System replacement. Below the launches, the International Space Station is running a reduced-crew rotation that gets its news-conference moment Tuesday afternoon. Above all of it, the Perseids peak on the night of August 12-13 under a New Moon — the first moonless Perseid peak since 2018 and one of the best dark-sky meteor windows until 2028.
This week is shaped by the contrast: payload cadence above, and the rare chance of a properly dark night sky below.

Five of the six are Starlink V2 Mini batches, which is what the Vandenberg and Cape cadence looks like on a normal summer week in 2026. The two missions worth your attention are the Wednesday BlueBird flight and the NET H3 from Tanegashima.
The BlueBird 11-13 mission on Wednesday morning is the second launch in AST SpaceMobile's Block 2 campaign — three satellites at a time, each carrying a 2,400-square-foot phased-array antenna. These are the largest commercial communications antennas ever placed in low Earth orbit. By the end of this calendar year, AST SpaceMobile intends to have enough Block 2 birds on orbit to begin continuous direct-to-cell service to standard unmodified smartphones. The block sizes are the meaningful unit here, not the per-launch satellite count. With three more Block 2 birds added on Wednesday, the constellation moves from intermittent coverage in target regions to genuine commercial readiness for at least one carrier partner (the company has not disclosed which). The H3 ninth flight from Tanegashima on NET August 6 or 7 is carrying QZS-7, Japan's seventh Quasi-Zenith Satellite System spacecraft. The QZSS constellation augments GPS over Japan and the Asia-Pacific region, providing high-elevation coverage that improves position accuracy in urban canyons and mountainous terrain. The H3 program has had a difficult three-year arc, with the first flight failing in 2023 and recovery taking longer than JAXA publicly acknowledged at the time. A clean ninth flight with a national-priority payload would be a real milestone — it locks in the cadence that Japan's commercial and government customers have been waiting for. The four Starlink Vandenberg launches this week are the operational backbone of the West Coast tempo. The Aug 4 booster, B1063, will be on its 34th flight when it lifts off — that's not a typo. SpaceX has crossed the threshold where individual booster flight counts stop being the headline. Two years ago, a 34th flight would have been a story. This week it's bookkeeping.
The night of August 12-13 will be the best Perseids in years
Here's the part of the week-ahead brief that doesn't usually appear in this newsletter.
A New Moon falls on August 11, 2026. The Perseids peak on the night of August 12 into the predawn hours of August 13. That timing means the peak hours — the window between local midnight and dawn on Wednesday — happen under a completely dark sky, no Moon interference, no twilight glow. This is the first moonless Perseid peak since 2018 and one of the best until 2028. That is a hard sentence to write without sounding like an advertisement, but it is the actual situation. The peak Zenithal Hourly Rate (ZHR) of the Perseids is about 100 meteors per hour under ideal conditions — clear sky, radiant overhead, no light pollution. In practice you will see a fraction of that from a typical suburban backyard; from a dark site two hours outside a major city you will see substantially more. The Perseid meteoroid stream is dense and the particles enter the atmosphere at roughly 59 km/s, which makes them bright and easy to spot even at the fringe of light-polluted skies. The peak rates tend to spike: brief bursts of 150-200 meteors per hour happen during the peak hours in good years. The rates on the night before and after the peak will be roughly half the peak rate but still well above background.
What to do, operationally, between now and August 12:
This week (Aug 3-7): The Perseids are below peak but already active. Evening rates of 15-25 meteors per hour from a dark site are realistic, and early-arriving Perseids tend to be the brightest ("earthgrazers" — long, slow trails at a shallow angle). This is the week to scout a viewing site. Pick a spot with a clear northeast horizon, drive an hour out of your metro, bring a reclining chair. Binoculars are not needed — naked-eye viewing with a wide field of view catches more meteors than any telescope.
Aug 8-11: The Moon is a waning crescent rising between midnight and 3 a.m. local. Evening hours stay dark. Perseid rates climb to 30-50 per hour. The New Moon phase on the 11th is the dark-sky window for both meteor viewing and Milky Way imaging.
Aug 12-13 (peak): Moonless. Best viewing from local midnight through dawn on the 13th. The radiant in Perseus climbs high in the northeast by 2-3 a.m. Lie flat, look up, give your eyes 20-30 minutes to dark-adapt. A thermos and a warm layer matter more than any piece of gear.
Aug 14-15: Rates drop fast after the peak — two-thirds of peak activity in the first 24 hours, one-third in the next.
The Perseids are not rare. The dark skies for the peak are.
Two things to keep on your radar
The ISS reduced-crew rotation gets its public moment Tuesday. NASA astronaut Chris Williams spent 241 days aboard the ISS — about eight months — before his July 26 return. Standard ISS rotations run six months; Williams's stay was extended in a pattern that has become more common this year as commercial crew scheduling has tightened. NASA scheduled a press conference for Tuesday, August 4 at 2:45 PM EDT from Johnson Space Center. Watch for what he says about the operational load during the extended stay — that's the most useful signal the agency will offer about whether six-month rotations are still the working assumption. The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is now less than four weeks from launch. NET August 30 on a Falcon Heavy from Kennedy LC-39A, the Roman launch is the most consequential single event of the rest of 2026 for the astronomy community. The 300-megapixel infrared wide-field instrument will image more sky in a single exposure than Hubble has in 30+ years. The week of August 3-9 is a typical summer week by launch-cadence standards — six confirmed launches across two coasts and one international partner — and a quietly exceptional week by sky standards. The Perseid New Moon alignment is the kind of opportunity that only happens every few years. Whatever you do with it, do it without screens: lie on your back, find the darkest sky you can get to, and let your eyes do the work.
