What to read about space this week: the past keeps arriving

Six articles and essays published this week in the space press that reward the slow read. The common thread: anniversaries and archival rediscoveries. Three of the six deal directly with the past — and what they say about where space policy actually stands today.

Vikram-1: India's private space sector arrives in orbit

On July 18, Indian startup Skyroot Aerospace successfully launched Vikram-1, placing six payloads into a 450-kilometer orbit at 60-degree inclination. It is India's first privately developed orbital launch vehicle. The rocket is named for Vikram Sarabhai, the physicist who founded India's space program in the 1960s. Ajey Lele's account in The Space Review situates Vikram-1 within the broader liberalization of India's space sector that began in 2020 and frames it as a milestone not just for Skyroot but for the entire Indian commercial launch ecosystem. Getting to yes—or no: the mission authorization problem

Jeff Foust's piece in The Space Review this week addressed a policy problem that rarely gets explained clearly: the United States has no functioning system for authorizing commercial space missions that don't fit existing regulatory categories. The FAA, FCC, and other agencies have jurisdiction over slices of the problem, but no single agency has authority to say "yes" or "no" to novel commercial activities — satellite servicing, in-space manufacturing, orbital refueling, or crewed commercial missions beyond LEO. Industry has been pushing for a "mission authorization" framework for years. Foust's piece is notable for actually reporting on the current legislative attempt to create one, and for surfacing the paradox embedded in it: the same mechanism designed to say "yes" could also be weaponized to say "no" to activities that a future administration wants to block. This is the most substantive piece on US space regulatory policy published this week.

FARRAH at the Smithsonian: signals intelligence from the Cold War

Dwayne Day's piece in The Space Review covers the arrival of a half-scale model of the FARRAH signals intelligence satellite at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum. FARRAH was a Cold War program — satellites that detected Soviet radar emissions from low Earth orbit, spinning at 50-plus revolutions per minute and using dish antennas to sweep the face of the Earth. The program ran from the early 1960s through 2008, with about three dozen satellites launched over 30 years. The piece is a master class in reading space history through its hardware: the satellites' unusual form factors (some were no larger than a large suitcase, ejected from other satellites), their tape-recorder-to-direct-downlink evolution, and their operational use by tactical forces. Day has been writing about signals intelligence satellites for years, and this piece distills that expertise into an accessible account of a program most space journalists have never covered.

The human stories between the launches

The Space Review also published an interview this week with filmmaker James Bluemel, whose four-part PBS documentary series Once Upon a Time in Space is currently airing on US television. Emily Carney's conversation with Bluemel is worth reading even if you've never seen the series, because Bluemel explains his editorial philosophy: he anchors the series in the Shuttle-Mir era rather than Apollo, specifically because the human stories from that period — Anna Fisher returning to her infant daughter after her mission, the geopolitical improvisation of phase one of the ISS partnership — are more revealing than the familiar triumphalist narrative. Bluemel's comment that "astronauts can sometimes feel a little bit otherworldly" and that capturing vulnerability was his actual editorial goal is the kind of framing that separates a documentary worth watching from another archival footage reel.

The Arsenal's new owners

Bharath Gopalaswamy and Daniel Dant argue in The Space Review that the US space industrial base is undergoing structural changes driven by new commercial entrants and new investment patterns — and that the government's demand-side communication hasn't adapted to match. The piece is policy-dense but worth the effort: the authors are arguing that how the government articulates what it wants from its space suppliers shapes which companies invest in meeting that demand, and that the current communication structure is failing to signal opportunity clearly enough to sustain the industrial base the US says it wants. It's a supply-chain argument applied to space hardware, and it connects to the mission authorization piece above: both are about whether the institutional framework can keep pace with the commercial capability.

The lesson Viking keeps teaching

Casey Dreier, chief of space policy at The Planetary Society, used the 50th anniversary of Viking 1's Mars landing to write about the political economy of flagship science missions. His central data point: Viking cost roughly $8.5 billion in today's dollars — among the most expensive science missions NASA has ever run — and generated enormous public attention at landing, and then that attention collapsed within days. The follow-on Mars exploration program was effectively defunded within a decade. Dreier's framing is that Viking was both a scientific apex and a political anomaly: it happened because the political moment allowed it, and it did not produce the sustained funding stream its results warranted. This is the same dynamic The Planetary Society was founded partly to address. Fifty years on, the question of whether flagship science missions can be made politically durable remains the central unsolved problem of NASA's exploration program.

Editor's Note

Three of the six pieces above deal with anniversaries or archival rediscoveries. That is not a coincidence. The past is arriving this week — the Viking 50th, the FARRAH satellite at the Smithsonian, the PBS documentary anchored in Shuttle-Mir rather than Apollo — and it's arriving without coordination, because anniversaries surface on their own schedule. What connects them is a question worth sitting with: why does space history keep requiring rescue? Why do the institutional memory and the political will that made things like Viking possible need to be rebuilt every generation rather than accumulated?

The answer probably has something to do with the speed of political cycles versus the speed of space hardware cycles. A mission that takes 15 years to develop and 50 years to fully understand its results does not fit naturally into a political system that thinks in two- and four-year increments. The anniversaries arrive; the lessons they carry arrive; the institutional capacity to act on those lessons arrives and then departs again.

The commercial space sector is, in part, a response to this problem — private capital and private timelines are less hostage to political discontinuity than public funding. Vikram-1 is notable not because India rediscovered the lesson of Viking but because a private company built the thing on a schedule that didn't require a congressional appropriation. That is a different model, and its own anniversary will arrive eventually.

The launches don't stop for anniversaries, of course. The coming week has more of them. But the anniversaries are worth noting while they're here — they're the times the past is available to us.
